Salmon Woman

-- for Janet Music

  The lady was a swimmer of devotion,
A salmon in the current, pressing true
And hard against the river's rocky edges,
The tissues in her spirit driving through

The twisting race, the water's headlong surges,
Her color going deeper, growing fuller,
The farther up the river moved her heart,
The farther up the river swam her soul.

The pool where she began embraced her color,
Then washed her in the lovings that she sowed;
She rolled once more, then left them in a swirling--
Her color, in its motion, like a jewel.
